US doctor faces life in jail after 'performing female genital mutilation on young girls'
The case appears to be the first criminal prosecution of its kind after the practice was outlawed in the US in 1996.
A doctor in the US has been charged with performing genital mutilation on seven-year-old girls in what is believed to be a legal first.
Jumana Nagarwala, an emergency room physician at a Detroit hospital, allegedly performed the procedures at an unnamed medical clinic in the Detroit suburb of Livonia.
"Female genital mutilation constitutes a particularly brutal form of violence against women and girls," acting US Attorney in Detroit Daniel Lemisch said in a statement.
"The practice has no place in modern society and those who perform FGM on minors will be held accountable under federal law."
Nagarwala appeared in federal court on Thursday and was remanded to return on Monday, according to the US Department of Justice.
Female genital mutilation, or FGM, typically involves the partial or total removal of the clitoris and is barred by numerous international treaties.
The practice is common in several African countries, including Somalia, Sudan and Egypt, where it is often a cultural or religious tradition...

'It felt like the heavens were falling': Afghans reel from Moab impact
Locals describe the moment the ‘mother of all bombs’ was dropped, as critics question the wisdom of deploying the weapon.
After his evening prayers, Mohammad Shahzadah closed the house gates and sat down for dinner. Then the blast came, engulfing the sky in flames and sending tremors through the ground.
“The earth felt like a boat in a storm,” Shahzadah said. “I thought my house was being bombed. Last year a drone strike targeted a house next to mine, but this time it felt like the heavens were falling. The children and women were very scared.”
The US dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb ever used in combat on eastern Afghanistan on Thursday in another dramatic show of military force by the Trump administration.
36 Isis militants killed in US 'mother of all bombs' attack, Afghan ministry says
The GBU-43/B, colloquially known as the “mother of all bombs” or Moab, targeted tunnels and bunkers in Achin district in Nangarhar province, built by fighters loyal to Islamic State who also kept prisoners there.
A GPS-guided demolition bomb with an explosive yield equivalent to 11 tonnes of TNT, it explodes above ground with a radius of more than a mile.
The bomb was dropped in the mountains close to Moman village in an area called Asadkhel. About 1.5 miles away, in Shaddle Bazar where Shahzadah lives, the impact was palpable...

World 'on the brink of thermo-nuclear war', as North Korea mulls test that could goad Trump
North Korea has warned that the world is on the brink of “thermo-nuclear war” as fears rise that Pyongyang is planning a test of military hardware that could provoke a response from President Donald Trump.
Tensions over the North’s nuclear ambitions escalated further on Friday after reports in the US that Washington was ready to launch a pre-emptive strike, while China called for all sides to pull back from an “irreversible and unmanageable stage”.
Evidence of increased activity in recent weeks at the North's nuclear test sites has sparked fears that the country may be about to conduct its sixth nuclear test since 2006 at the weekend.
Tension between Washington and Pyongyang has risen in recent days with a US navy strike group being ordered into the western Pacific Ocean...

Do these satellite images prove North Korea is preparing to detonate a new nuclear bomb to mark sinister 'Day of the Sun' as Trump's armada moves in
New satellite images have emerged purportedly showing how North Korea is preparing to detonate a nuclear bomb to coincide with its 'Day of the Sun' national day on Saturday.
Aerial photos taken yesterday show continued activity at the Punggye-ri Nuclear site where US officials fear a nuclear device has been installed in a tunnel ahead of another test.
It comes as the regime today warned foreign journalists to prepare for a 'big event' on Thursday and as tensions remained high after President Donald Trump sent a US Navy strike group steaming toward the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea's most important national day is on Saturday April 15 when North Korea commemorates the birth anniversary of its founding president Kim Il Sung. However, the big event may have been the grand unveiling of a sprawling housing project in Pyongyang.
Ahead of the event, Kim Jong-un yesterday oversaw a commando operation in which special forces dropped from light transport planes 'like hail' and 'mercilessly blew up enemy targets'.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe today underscored fears about possible threats from North Korea, telling parliament in Tokyo that Pyongyang could have the capacity to deliver missiles equipped with sarin nerve gas...

Catholic priest who repeatedly raped boy until he prayed for death jailed for 17 years
A Catholic priest who repeatedly raped a young boy until he prayed for death was today jailed for 17 years.
Father Michael Higginbottom, 74, revelled in “cruel, sadistic bullying” at St Joseph’s College, a seminary for prospective priests, in Upholland, near Ormskirk.
He used a strap and cane on boys as punishment and said he could “make this as easy or as hard” as the victim wanted before carrying out sickening sexual abuse.
The priest and teacher told Liverpool Crown Court he did not even remember the boy, who is now in his 50s, and denied eight sexual offences in the 1970s.
Defence lawyers for Higginbottom, of West Farm Road, Newcastle, suggested the man made up the allegations to try and get financial compensation...
