Trump 'looks forward to visiting China' - Tillerson
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has told China's President Xi Jinping that President Donald Trump looks forward to visiting his country, and to enhancing understanding between the states.
Mr Tillerson met the Chinese leader in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, as his East Asian tour comes to an end.
Mr Xi said he was glad to see good progress from Mr Tillerson's meetings.
"You said that China-US relations can only be friendly. I express my appreciation for this," he said.
Mr Xi added that he had spoken to the US president several times.
"We are both expecting a new era for constructive development," he said.
Mr Tillerson said Mr Trump places a "very high value on the communications that have already occurred"...

German media attacks 'unsophisticated and self-absorbed' Trump after he refuses to shake Angela Merkel's hand at the White House in tense summit ... but he dismisses reports as 'fake news'
Donald Trump is 'an unsophisticated yet self-absorbed political neophyte', according to sections of the German press - in comparison to 'experienced' Angela Merkel.
The two 'could hardly be more contradictory', according to reports of their 'awkward' meeting yesterday.
The US President refused to shake the German Chancellor's hand, a moment which German newspapers have seized on to highlight the huge differences between the two.
Tabloid Bild carried a picture of the world leaders sitting awkwardly next to each other, while also pointing out how 'unusual' it was that Merkel found herself seated next to Trump's daughter Ivanka - who has no official role in the administration.
It said the German leader appeared 'irritated'.
Meeting for the first time - a few days behind schedule after Merkel's visit was postponed due to snow - the two leaders got off to a good start, with a warm welcome outside the West Wing...

Senators Demand State Department Probe Into George Soros Organizations
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and a group of his colleagues are calling on the newly appointed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to immediately investigate how US taxpayer funds are being used by the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support Soros-backed, leftist political groups in several Eastern European countries including Macedonia and Albania. According to the letter, potentially millions of taxpayer dollars are being funneled through USAID to Soros' Open Society Foundations with the explicit goal of pushing his progressive agenda.
"Unfortunately, we have received a credible report that, over the past few years, the U.S. Mission there has actively intervened in the party politics of Macedonia, as well as in the shaping of its media environment and civil society, often favoring left-leaning political group over others. We find these reports discoraging and, if true, highly problematic."
"Much of the concerning activity in Macedonia has been perpetuated through USAID funds awarded to implementing entities such as George Soros' Open Society Foundations. As the recipient of multiple grant awards and serving as a USAID contractor implementing projects in this small nation of 2.1 million people, our taxpayer funded foreign aid goes far, allowing Foundation Open Society - Macedonia (FOSM) to push a progressive agenda and invigorate the political left. Our foreign aid should only be used to promote a political agenda if it is in the security or economic interests of our country to do so, and even at that, we must be cautious and respectful in such an endeavor. We should be especially wary of promoting policies that remain controversial even in our own country and that have the potential to harm our relationship with the citizens of recipient countries."
As Fox News pointed out, USAID gave nearly $15 million to Soros' Foundation Open Society - Macedonia, and other Soros-linked organizations in the region, in the last 4 years of Obama's presidency alone...

Hillary Clinton 'ready to come out of the woods' and rejoin public life
The former presidential candidate says she still has a hard time watching the news, but urged a divided country to find common ground.
Hillary Clinton says she’s “ready to come out of the woods” and help Americans find common ground.
Clinton’s gradual return to the public spotlight following her presidential election loss continued with a St Patrick’s Day speech in her late father’s Pennsylvania home town.
“I’m like a lot of my friends right now, I have a hard time watching the news,” Clinton told an Irish women’s group.
But she urged a divided country to work together to solve problems, recalling how, as first lady, she met with female leaders working to bring peace to Northern Ireland...

Trump NASA Budget Proposal Cancels Europa Lander Project, Asteroid Redirect Mission
Some of NASA missions in development - including one to land on Jupiter's icy moon Europa and a few Earth science missions - will not go forward as per President Donald Trump's budget proposal for fiscal 2018.
Overall, NASA's funding for 2018 would be cut from roughly $19.3 billion to $19.1 billion, according to the budget proposal released on Thursday.
The budget increases cooperation with industry through the use of public-private partnerships, focuses efforts on deep space exploration rather than Earth-centric research, NASA said.
"Overall science funding is stable, although some missions in development will not go forward and others will see increases," NASA acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot said in a statement.
"We remain committed to studying our home planet and the universe, but are reshaping our focus within the resources available to us -- a budget not far from where we have been in recent years, and which enables our wide ranging science work on many fronts," Lightfoot said.
The budget terminates four Earth science missions (PACE, OCO-3, DSCOVR Earth-viewing instruments, and CLARREO Pathfinder) and reduces funding for Earth science research grants.
The budget cancels the multi-billion-dollar Asteroid Redirect Mission...

Donald Trump fuels diplomatic row with Britain after apology from US officials over GCHQ wiretapping claims
Donald Trump remained unrepentant amid a diplomatic row with Britain on Friday, hours after US officials made a formal apology for accusing GCHQ of helping Barack Obama spy on the then presidential candidate.
Sean Spicer, the president's press secretary, repeated a claim on Thursday evening – initially made by an analyst on Fox News – that GCHQ was used by Mr Obama to spy on Trump Tower in the lead-up to last November's election.
The comments prompted a furious response from GCHQ, which in a break from normal practice issued a public statement: "Recent allegations made by media commentator Judge Andrew Napolitano about GCHQ being asked to conduct 'wiretapping' against the then president-elect are nonsense. They are utterly ridiculous and should be ignored."...

Israel Is Now Officially an 'Apartheid State': UN
The report has confirmed what Palestinians have been saying for decades.
Through a system of racial segregation and discrimination, Israel has been carrying out an “apartheid regime” against Palestinian populations, according to a new report released by the United Nations.
The report by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, ESCWA, found that “on the basis of overwhelming evidence ... Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid,” which “dominates the Palestinian people as a whole.”
The main way that Israel carries out its apartheid system is through “strategic fragmentation” whereby Palestinians are split into four different oppressed groups. “Three of them (citizens of Israel, residents of East Jerusalem and the populace under occupation in the West Bank and Gaza) living under direct Israeli rule and the remainder, refugees and involuntary exiles, living beyond,” the ESCWA said...

Earth's inner Van Allen belt is far weaker than thought - and could lead to radical new spacecraft designs, NASA reveals
There is still much to be learned about Earth’s two donut-shaped radiation belts – and, new observations suggest spacecraft may soon have a better shot at studying them first-hand.
Since the discovery of the Van Allen Belts roughly 50 years ago, it’s been thought that the inner portion was rich in super-fast electrons, which would bombard craft with radiation.
Now, scientists have found that there is far less radiation in the inner belt than they’d previously thought.
In a new study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, observations from NASA’s Van Allen Probes revealed that there are usually no relativistic electrons in the inner belt.
The discovery goes against previous assumptions...
