Planet Earth set to shiver through 'mini ice age' - will it save humanity from global warming?

Thames could freeze over during cold snap caused by slowdown in solar activity

Scientists have claimed Planet Earth is just 15 years away from a 'mini ice age' which could cause the River Thames to freeze over.

This chilling warning comes from experts at the University of Northumbria, who claimed to have devised a new model of the Sun's activity which gives "unprecedentedly accurate predictions".

The big freeze will take place between 2020 and 2030, causing similar conditions to the famous "Maunder minimum" which took place between 1645 and 1715 and caused Europe to shiver through uncommonly cold winters.

Valentina Zharkova, professor in mathematics at Northumbria University, said the next chill would be caused by a solar slow down which will cause the Sun's activity to plunge by up to 60%.

This is due to the movements of two waves of "fluid" within the Sun, which will "effectively cancel each other out".

"We predict that this will lead to the properties of a Maunder minimum," said Professor Zharkova.

So will this save us from the ravages of global warming?

Sadly not, according to previous research which found the cooling effect of the ice age is not enough to prevent the planet overheating.

Last month, the British Met Office released research which claimed temperatures in Britain could plunge by 0.8°C, which does not mean "the Sun is going to save us from global warming".

Another paper claimed climate change is going to heat up the world so much that not even the slumbering Sun can save us.

"This temperature decrease [caused by the mini ice age] is much smaller than the warming expected from anthropogenic [human] greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the century," wrote Georg Feulner and Stefan Rahmstorf in the journal Geophysical Research Letters in 2010.

Sleep tight everyone.

  1. Thanks for posting this Canauzzie. Politicians have deliberately taken advantage of slogans to herd people into believing arguments that support political outcomes, as DL has pointed out, and also others on OWoN.

    1. Global Warming
Governments sprout this phrase. People say 'but its colder so you're wrong!' Alternatively, govs say 'we need to tax carbon!' bulldust!! We need to reduce the thermogenic gases (ie move to clean energy). A better term to use is climate change, because we will always oscillate warmer and cooler.

    2. Dynamic Systems
This isn't taught in schools, so people aren't as familiar with how they work. They have their own feedback mechanisms that counter the effects of inputs, so that even if you input 'bad things', the system stays balanced. But only up to a point. At that point, the whole system goes through a period of chaos before reaching a new balance. In climate terms this means: we can pump CO2 for decades and nothing will change much, but then the climate's capacity to absorb that CO2 is reached then bingo! All hell starts to break loose and you have systems becoming unbalanced until the new balance is reached. (massive storms, salinity changes in the ocean, ocean current changes, drought, floods, temperature oscillations, strange weather).

    3. The Sun causes a lot of climate change naturally, but we add to it.
This mini ice age was coming naturally anyway. We just sped its arrival by maybe a few hundred years by artificially warming the atmosphere. That caused unaturally high energy inputs which trigger mechanisms to rebalance this.

Bottom Line: Who cares what the causes are. As humans, by getting rid of polluting thermogenic gases and moving to clean energy sources, we will:
    1. get rid of pollution on Earth (and reduce all the disease that goes with it)
    2. get rid of any human induced inputs to the climate equation.

I encourage people to resist getting caught up in either camp of the 'climate change debate'. It is politically motivated. We only need to move to clean energy sources.

    1. A note on point 3 above:
"3. The Sun causes a lot of climate change naturally, but we add to it. This mini ice age was coming naturally anyway. We just sped its arrival by maybe a few hundred years by artificially warming the atmosphere. That caused unnaturally high energy inputs which trigger mechanisms to rebalance this."

Saturnalia correctly pointed out the Sun's activity was weakening in this cycle. What would that do to the Earth? It would induce it to react to maintain balance, ie warm up somehow, naturally, using currents, humidity, albedo etc.

Our additions of CO2 added to Earth's measures, making it seem the sun was increasing increasing its activity and causing the heating up to overshoot. So what does the Earth do in response? Bring on cooling.

So the Earth warming then cooling isn't incongruous to a Sun that is decreasing its activity temporarily. When you think in scientific terms, everything fits both sides of the debate.

    2. there is no such thing as Global Warming or its associate: Climate Change. there is only science and fact. fact is GW and CG are propaganda pieces to make humans believe we are the cause of everything wrong on Earth and should be eliminated as the cancer species we are. the only cancers on this planet are the govt's and corporations who have actually harmed Earth with their nuclear testing and toxic chemicals. the Earth has many outside forces upon her. go to youtube look up Suspicious Observers and learn how the solar system and solar activity actually impact our weather and climate. not your car. also the Thunderbolts Project has many speakers like Piers Corbyn who understand the fundamentals of science and solar activity. CO2 pollution is BS. it's about teaching humans they are vermin. instead look at what CO2 is. it is food for plants. plants are food for us. get it?! lower the CO2 and lower the food supply. it's logic. if you want to get angry about something try Geoengineering. they're spraying us like bugs and denying it. i have done research in all these areas and can provide loads of documentation through patents, lectures, etc to show that humans aren't the cause, they're the solution... if the UN and the elite would just get the hell out of our way! so stop promoting propaganda pieces like the one above.... we are heading into an ice age, mini or what will come, so we better get ready now. GW/CG is not going to stop the cold.

    3. vdp gazette,

Thank you for your input and welcome to OWoN. I have enjoyed Suspicious Observers for years.

We post articles like this for debate, not necessarily because we agree.

That being said, whether you agree with climate change due to humans or not, one thing that cannot be overlooked is a cleaner world is better for everybody. So change is necessary.

Carbon taxes and such are nefarious in intent, but there are other ways to combat pollution in general.

  2. I think we need to change the term to "climate damage".

If we keep dumping poisons into the air, water and soil, I think we can agree it is good for no one.

    1. Texian weather occurs on short time scales such as days. Climate is trends in weather that occurs over longer time scales such as years and decades. They are different.
